Degrees of Impossibly Small

When I look at stagnant water I see communities of many ages, sizes, and types living together in peace and war. I rarely see the activity where individuals are attacking one another. Of course in this world, attacking means quietly absorbing. Most of the time the individual organisms seem to be peacefully moving around absorbing their needs through their surfaces directly from the environment into their bodies. There are rare exceptions where attacks (of a sort) do occur but I haven't seen many.
