The latest mudpuddle biome is maturing. The sample taken from the mudpuddle water is very viscous--jammed with biofilm and trapped organisms. A rotifer died in the thick fluid and is being consumed by protozoans. After some time doing this, the pattern becomes very clear. The biofilm begins to thicken the water medium after just a few days. The number of protists increases, consuming the growing bacteria population. Then the bacteria population declines, the protists population follows into decline. After a few weeks the water reaches a state where large protists vanish and the water clears.
