I dropped some sweetened dry cereal into water a few days ago to watch for the appearance of viable microbes. Slowly the larger microbes are beginning to appear, but the rate of their appearance is still only a few percent per observation. I do see some very small microbes. Figures that look like possible bacteria are common but it is hard to evaluate them. Clearly protist-size organisms are growing in the sample.
