Inside and Outside a Piece of Apple Skin

Trying to view a piece of apple skin under the microscope illustrates how optically active the sugary flesh of an apple is. I could see the cells of the apple but they are hard to get sharp and appear to be optically distorted. Like many fruits, the apple tissue has lens or prism-like qualities.
