Growths on the Surface of a Squash

I took shavings from the surface of a squash because
my friend said there was mold on it. The shavings came
out hard and rigid, but the only thing that appeared to be
different about the rough surface were tiny flakes,
looking like pieces of wood scattered on a hillside.
