Just under the surface

The widest variety of organisms are often close to the surface of the water. This mudpuddle has no biofilm, but masses of decaying vegetation float just under the surface of the water and any probe will pick up a mass of rotted leaf. There are rotifers and a variety of micro- organisms organisms here.
