These microscopic communities are so small that a single slide can have more than one biome community on it, depending on the biological activity going on in any small area. On my visit to the new mudpuddle I took some very small pieces of floating flotsam to add to the slide. One piece provided an environment conducive to ciliates who congregated there. The other piece harbored some kind of special process around the piece of leaf that I picked up and held a mass of spores or biological material which did not favor ciliates. The two biomes were millimeters apart.
