After a week or so, the leaves that formed the basis for the new mudpuddle started to form the groundwork for a biofilm which appeared as a white mass on the water surface. This biofilm and the surrounding medium contained masses of bacteria and small flagellates plus a large number of and variety of ciliates and amoebas.
