Under the Mat

What is happening to this biome is a little novel. A leaf that settled on top of the water has become like a heavy elastic cover over the water. There is not much biology happening in the cover--there are what looks like random outlines of large cell formations. These are views under that plant fiber cover. A small number of moving protists can be seen under the cover, but many of them are dormant. The development of that cover has apparently limited the expansion of any population under it.
