Except for a few clean-up rotifers, the active organisms in the mudpuddle have become very small. As the Spring approaches in Winnipeg, my microbe collection has reached a terminal point. What remains are very small organisms. To call them bacteria would make sense, but they don't really behave like bacteria. Many of them move at high speeds and show a flexibility of motion that I don't associate with bacteria. As the weather warms I will resume collecting a new generation of organisms. But these tiny living things are worth contemplating.
