In the Dying Time of Cleanup

At the end of the life of a biome, food sources are consumed and the clean-up crew of rotifers begins to appear. What was a living biome becomes a storehouse of organic waste. The late residents are rotifers that that collect organic scraps. Often the remainder of the biome is seen piled up where the currents drop it. Sometimes now dead full organisms now float around.
