The protists and bacteria make quick work of a leaf soaked in a biofilm culture. After a week or so there is little left of the leaf structure beyond the presence of a few sturdy cell walls. The interior cell structure of the leaf is quickly replaced by protist and bacterial growth. Cell structure all but vanishes. The leaf almost becomes an assemblage of stringy membranes.
