If a leaf of grass falls into a puddle a gradual process takes place which results in the eventual destruction of the plant fiber. For some plant materials the process takes a long time. I took a leaf that had been soaking in a microbe-rich watery environment for days to see what kind of destruction microbes could cause. Most of the leaf was largely intact. Cell membranes and structure could still be observed. However, there are definite signs of destruction, discoloration and dark markings where tissue was destroyed. Part of the leaf had become liquid by this time, but much structure still remains.
