To study how the protozoa and bacteria affect plants I have been letting leaves soak in puddle water for long periods of time. Within a week or two of emergence, the organisms in the water begin attacking the leaves weakening the structures. The bacteria and protists first damage the more vulnerable plant tissue. But let the harder parts of stems and cell structures remain more or less intact.
