A couple of weeks ago I used a plastic bottle for a fresh water specimen. I had added some vegetation and waited a week or so fully expecting that my sample would fill with protists. The surprise was that I found essentially no protists. I only found rod bacteria. The content has not changed for the two weeks. There are simply none of my usual protozoans in the sample--only bacteria. The water is cloudy with them I don't know what elements are clouding the water but there is a large bacteria population.
