I took a special look at the very surface of the mudpuddle today instead of my usual dip into the thick tangle of decay at the bottom. What ended up on my microscope slide were mats of algae and cyanobacteria that floated in the water and associated small flagellates and bacteria. Cyanobacteria are almost eerie as they slide along. The water seems alive with molecule-like stirrings.
