I picked up a tiny piece of decayed leaf when I drew a sample from my artificial mud puddle today. It proved an interesting subject. The cell walls remained after the bodies of the cells had been consumed by organisms in the biome. These orderly walls formed a boxy matrix. The matrix was covered with diatoms and other forms algae. Some ciliates were sheltering in the structure that had been the leaf as well. Great (.5 mm) worms were present too, hiding behind.
