The Naming of the Years

Squirrel

over our bed
a cedar shingle roof
protects your pillows
walnuts drum the roof
hoards gather in the attic

Bison

prairie grass
as high as a warrior
trampled
the herd returns
a shadow of what it was

Cougar

the big cat’s scream
cuts across the trail
I stumble over nothing
as an echo gathers
the air thick around me

Beaver

slap!
an old beaver’s
warning
marsh still except
ever oblivious hikers

Raven

scolded
an ebony shadow shrugs
carelessly
its chest a ruffled muddle
the last tie you presented me

Mosquito

smoking volcanoes
the view worth
a million dollars
stop to admire
and find out why it’s not

(Chinese Zodiac using Western North America icons in tanka form. 6 to go.)

Gary, I love these. Year of the Mosquito...Hmm, I'm trying to figure that one out. I hate to think of anything devoted to that pest. The tanka is great, though. Bow six times.
Best, Kathryn

All animals the reader is very familiar with, Mr. B, but you've given them your own special spin. I found the Bison one most haunting. So sad that their numbers are not what they used to be. BTW -- is there a monkey coming along in the next set? Can you do a monkey one for me? Please? *whine, whine* Yeah, I know monkeys aren't exactly Western American icons, but I love them little monkeys!

Dear Mary Jane Marshmallow, Monkey is #9 in the Chinese so he has to be replaced. In my case with racoon which bears some resemblance. But fpr you, give me a bit and I will see what is there.

Kathy, the Skeeters is a Clan Totem in this region. BTW, this happened to us in our trip to Alaska last year.

Thanks all for the read.

Gary

Gary, enjoyed them all. I like them all but if forced to choose a fav. I'd say the bison, next the squirrel of course.
