Honorable Mention Southport Dale McLain I am not a mermaid though I once claimed to be; said I could survive below the water and forego this world of words. Because I loved the froth-rimmed sea, with its gifts of pearl and rust, I believed I could forget the stars that fell and left the sky bereft. I let myself become entangled in the low slung nets, watched the water turn from aqua to emerald, cobalt to slate and darker still. In cold, cold sea I lost my breath and closed my eyes. Then I remembered- scallops and turbans, bisque and coral, opal, olive, amethyst, rose and the sweet sound of my own name whispered in the night. I am a woman and I need the air to lift my voice I need the sun and the moon to fill my hands with light and shadows, a place to rest with wind and waves, quiet so I can listen for a song on the water. I am not a mermaid or a prisoner, neither skeptic nor fool. I am so full of hope that I swim on the sparkling surface and pretend that I am flying.
