Honorable Mention Sailor in the Rain Denis Garrison At eight bells when, at last, my watch is done, scatter me leeward, my Captain, from the fantail: a brief gray cloud, a smudge upon that lightsome day. Then I will ride upon the silent and remorseless pulse of Mother Sea and live the life arterial! O, venous joy! What currents will I plumb then; what depths achieve! How lightly will I rise and lighter fall as rain upon the land ... photosynthetic rapture of the green! ecstasy mitochondrial! ... to spiral in boundless skies and fall on varied shores; ... to plummet from weeping cliffs and run in giggling rills; ... to trickle hills and pool in chasms labyrinthine. In unmeasured time, once more will I flow again, in estuarine glory, back into the triumphant sea. Wait for me, you thirsting continents; I shall return.
