Honorable Mention
Rendered
Christopher T. George

"[At] a factory in New Jersey ... books are boiled in great big vats..."
Andrei Codrescu, The Disappearance of the Outside

"In recent years, well over 100 people have disappeared or been "rendered" [by the CIA]. . . Some are taken to prisons infamous for torture. And a few may have been rendered by mistake." CIA Flying Suspects to Torture? CBS News

The writer joked about bubbling vats
where books are rendered to pulp
in Jersey, home of five signers of
the Declaration of Independence,
Woodrow Wilson and Walt Whitman.

While Walt tended to wounded boys
below the scales of Judiciary Square,
soldiers camped in the U.S. Capitol;
wagons hauled papers of the founders
down to the Potomac to be dumped.

Just as nags are knackered into glue,
war's machine renders soldiers to pulp;
suspects are broken by lash and fist,
and electrodes applied to genitals
by men in black masks and gloves.

Words of love and freedom make us firm
in the melée of battle, the hardest
of times, in the blizzards of doubt:
the last words on the lips of a man,
his gurgles of twenty years before.
