Honorable Mention The Clean City of Bern J. Bescup So Switzerland is indeed as clean as they say. At least here at the Hotel-Pension Marthahaus. Polished chrome faucets fill white porcelain basins worthy of more than the mere word ‘sink’. Behind the door labeled ‘dousche’ more-green-than-turquoise tiles stand at attention—lieutenants in rank and file keep it real for the Swiss Army of Cleanliness. In my temporary solitude I closed-eye lean backward under falling water wet hair contacts tile and I press pause allow my mind to recategorize, organize the library of recollections, blackening, which were today. Open. Blink. On tiptoe I spot one lone outpost of dust atop the tile wall. Out in the city graffiti artists cannot be destroyed —only contained. Einstein’s House is closed for the next two months. I suppose even he cannot be expected to be immaculate, on display from all angles all the time.
