Honorable Mention
Stephen as a Young Man
M. Kathryn Black

You stood on the beach without a shirt,
in jeans with the top button undone,
holding a hammer to shore up your father’s shop.

A frisson of pleasure passed through me;
you were too perfect; the silken colors
of the bay behind us didn’t glow as you did.

A young man at the height of beauty
is as coy as a woman, shy as a school-girl.
You bowed your head, kneaded your foot in sand.

I wanted to see your full lips, your green eyes
smile upon me as I talked you into a photograph;
I was both brave and foolish.

The scurrilous camera clicked anyway
catching a pose Michelangelo would have been
proud to carve in pure white marble.
