Honorable Mention
The Locket
Lia (E. V. Brooks)

They found his mother under Itchen Bridge,
face down. Fourteen weeks,
fourteen blood red reasons to blame himself
while she twisted amongst the poles
where old tyres and broken chairs
bury hard in the river bed.

He stood over her
as she lay on cold metal
without her blue flannel dress.
Where is her necklace?--
a tiny blue stone embodied in a locket,
a present
dragged fifteen hundred yards to the docks
and the bull rushes.
She sleeps incomplete.

In his nightmares,
he doesn’t see his dead mother twisting
under the water, her neck
snapping against the supports of the bridge.
He watches a woman with thin hands
standing at the bank
pulling up the locket from its death
in the deep.
