Honorable Mention Memorial Trees Mark Allinson Planted fifty years ago with his own hands these three cypress trees - swaying headstones of my grandfather's grave. Now by the clasping and interlocking of their roots they bond the dust and ash of all he left. From a light plane he drifted down to be sifted by sinewy fingers of sigh-racked limbs. Resurrected to this trinity he watches as seasons flare like the wink of white-caps, as tides like a pulse beat rocks to powder. Through his arms rush silver-lined clouds of night, as the dull thunder of surf shudders his roots like laughter. In silence aloof he watches over this rugged coast he loved, the birds trusting his open hands.
