Honorable Mention
Maumee in Summer
Douglas Story

Deep ambers and oranges
set fire to the water
as it winks and sparkles
against the afternoon sky.

Lazy day, fat dogs rolling
in the grass,
their pink tongues -
a weeks supply of burgers
loll through their teeth.

Unhooded cars cruise
and radios blare around
the bend that is marked
with yellow chevrons.

And a darkening sky
reminds me how little I have done
as I hood the lids over my eyes
and squint at the sun.

I would live here
for a while .
And fish in the river with you.
