We know ourselves too well,
likes and dislikes, unbroken habits,
broken promises, telling tendencies.

Once read books collecting dust,
nothing special.
No pages book-marked,
highlighted words
fading white.

There are no surprises.
An old patchwork quilt
spread on feather bed,
comfortable softness,
worn without excitement.

Still a man might dream
of making snow angels
naked on a December day.
