Honorable Mention In Closets Steve Williams are musty boxes containing secrets bound in crusted tape. In closets are decisions made by depression era parents with three boys, a pregnancy and not enough food. Afterwards, Frank, Stanley, and Billy watched their father’s wedding to a new mother, a new sister, watched them put boxes and clothes into their lost mother’s closet. At night, the boys would steal in and throw her clothes on the floor, leave the hangers softly chiming a dirge. One twisted, dirty hanger dangles in the back of Billy’s closet. Years before, he had found his parents on the kitchen floor. His father lay shuddering over her still form. The dress had captured her blood. A hanger lay like a scythe beyond his jerking fingers.
