Honorable Mention Artifacts of a Journey Steve Williams The infant perches on a confluence of rivers, eats the current and grows mud alleys into asphalt bones. An omnivore, it consumes the natives. The blood people circulate governed by an elected immune system. Teen towns finger each boundary, merge and suburbs are born, red cells mingle, rivers dammed. More natives feed each generation storm of consumption, competition, ripples of conquest. The inner city grays, creaks of arthritis. Amidst cracked concrete hips and cataract plywood windows, the conscience remains; churches of the spirit, islands of the soul, nurturers of willful seeds who fly into ghost flesh and root, thrash, and sprout into dry cleaners, donut shops and liquor stores. Old city is humus underfoot, churches, temples and mosques now nursery logs. Beyond fingertips, of this renewal typhoon, artists come to dwell, linger, feel the barometric change; to answer the pleas of the storm for someone to paint life’s passage, sing love’s cantos, write our poems.
