Honorable Mention
Fragment from a Canticle to Words
Gary Blankenship

let the words loose
let them march to the sound of trombones and cymbals
let them out of the jacket you have sown from rules set down by men dead
so long their dust is dust
let them wing towards asteroids and fall towards their destruction
let them smile as if they forgot a secret
let them wind their way along the freeway
the bikeway
the jogging path
let them get lost in the mall
let them climb to the top of the Sears Tower elevatorless
let them see Jesus in a friend egg
Buddha in a hood ornament

let them color outside the lines
let them run nude through the halls of justice
let them explode in your face
lick your ear
suck your toes
let them steal eggs and apples from the farmer two fields over
let them rabble and babble and mispronounce nuclear
let them pray to false gods
let them curse falsity
let them gentle take a lost child by the hand
let them marry your sister
let them bake burnt cookies
undercook pudding pies
serve beets to the king

let them argue among themselves while you nap on the coach
let them emote
let them disappear down the mole hole
and return with roots and stones for supper
let them remind you of how damn dumb you have been
let them tutor
let them hide ideas behind their behinds
let them wear a hat
let them bow to naked queens and eat limes off their knees
let them cry
weep
despair
promise
predict
fool

let them be foolish
let them pontificate
let them be kind
be kind to them
let them spit in the well
let them snore
let them hoard the sheets
let them listen to Buddy’s Boggy Beat till four am
set an alarm clock
let them drink hemlock and wake in the morning
know when there are enough of them
know when they want to sleep

wake them for the next dance

let the words wear your skin
