Honorable Mention
Blessings Given, After Dario
Gary Blankenship

Blessed is the tree, for it can scarcely feel,
and more blessed still is the hard stone, for it no longer feels at all.

--Ruben Dario, Fate

Blessed are twigs for they know their place
on the ground or above.
Blessed are leaves,
grasses, moss, wet kelp or dry,
the forest and the trees.
Blessed are dandelions for they speak their mind.

Blessed are pebbles for they remind us
of where we walk and how.
Blessed are rocks,
great stones, fractured boulders and plain,
the finest grains of sand.
Blessed are the rapids for they carry the day.

Blessed are bushtits, nuthatches, juncos,
crows, jays and starlings,
the flicker and the pigeon,
ring neck’s call,
wild geese on the wind’s wing.
Blessed are the fox, badger and grizzly dormant in their den.

Blessed are lampposts, park benches, stop signs
and those that green command we go,
the toll booth on the interchange,
jersey barriers,
bridge trusses, bolts and brackets.
Blessed are foundations, roofs and the empty spaces in between.

Blessed are the gardeners, waitresses and clerks,
invisible as much as seen,
traffic cop and garbage man,
the bag lady who helps us cross the street,
strippers, soldiers, sailors.
Blessed is the stray dog that finishes the pickle in our lunch.

Blessed is the peace, thin as last year’s web,
the unfired bush,
limestone, shale and shells beneath our blooded feet,
the word given or not yet taken.
Blessed is tomorrow’s tomorrow when it ever comes.
