Honorable Mention
The Ghost of Vincent Van Gogh
Speaks to Chin-yeh Chi
Lauriette (Laurie Byro)

For Joe Salerno

You have failed me with your empty easel,
your brushes sitting motionless,
like the bird who watched swirling stars
from the asylum window.

Dr. Gachet said “pay him no mind,” but
he told me many odd things
about the universe, about stars colliding
with the earth. I tried to paint them,
I tried to capture that harbinger of death.
Instead I became giddy with the idea
of making black strokes with his feet,
like an Oriental master.

Chin-yeh Chi, you are a failed painter,
with your strange, unborn dream paintings.
I am writing to Theo with an idea
of an artist without paint,
who will record these dreams
into beautiful blank pages.

The bird flew off
colliding with a star
and the dry dust of the winter garden
receives each fallen feather
like black rain-drops.

Chin-yeh Chi upon awaking,
writes down this entire painting
with his finest camel’s hair brush.
