I almost gave up trying to photograph the cells on the skin of a mandarin orange. I had to scrape the sticky inner (protective) coating on the skin in order to reach imageable cell membranes. The cells of the mandarin orange skin are very small. They are hidden under a dense and sticky membrane. The cells within the inner lining of the skin do not have a regular shape. I had to scrape away the viscous lining of the skin then I could see the cell boundaries.
