Joint in a Branch of a Weed

This anonymous weed grows in the front lawn of the house. I Decided to see what secrets it hides. Near the joint where two leaf stems come together is a tiny structure (about .5 mm length). It looks like a kind of half-formed leaf. The anatomy of this part of the plant resembles both stem and leaf including leaf- like stomata within stem-like joints.
