Being a microbe is like making a living from the sea. Microbes rarely take long journeys across the huge expanse of the microscope slide. They stay safely in the shallow shoals around the islands. They are in-shore fishers. Looking at the life forms near a small biofilm outcrop, I found them clinging to he shore. Only the very small, the bacteria and flagellates, move in more remote waters.
