The new mud puddle is passing through an important phase. The bacteria census has reached a critical level. The individual bacteria cells have broadcast their chemical signals and they are in the mood to clump with others to form biofilm. Sheets have already formed and unions of bacteria can be seen wriggling about closely resembling multi-celled organisms.
