When you look at a screen full of impossibly small microscopic things, how can you tell which are alive and which are just flotsam? The identification of life and even the interpretation of the behavior of living things may be an innate feature or a very early learned feature of human minds and eyes. The ability to recognize and interpret life may be of great importance as we travel in search of life on other planets.
