The carrot is a special kind of root. The cells are slightly odd-shaped chunks or boxes. A problem with photographing the carrot is that the structure is constantly excreting a sugary liquid which clouds the photographs. The experience is like looking at chunks of sugar.

It's interesting. The carrot generates gas--not much but when the objective lens gets very close to the cells as it does using the high power lens, vapors generated by the carrot fog the lens. I can only use the me medium power lens for most of these pictures because the high power which focusses very close to the carrot is fogged by vapor.
