Nature's engineering department is hard at work. But there is a limit. The bio-based resources of the mudpuddle are quickly getting used up. Unless I add more biofuel the protists will soon use up the consumables (vegetation) in the mudpuddle. I know one thing: these tiny creatures are at the top of their own biological hierarchy. They break down the complex, organized parts of the natural environment into simpler elements. They are part of the system that recycles the elements of the earth. It's up to plants to rebuild.
