My recent cultures have not turned up any active protozoans. There are many bacteria and the bacteria appear to play a role in the tearing apart the cell strctures from leaves that I put in the water hoping to include some protists. At first I was thinking that these cell fragments were a kind of unmoving protists, but now I am convinced otherwise. I went outside today to pick up water from another mudpuddle in the grass. What I found were floating cell groups which I am convinced are grass cells loosened by the bacteria in the water. Maybe it's just too cold for protists.
