I was very interested to read David's question and the ensuing thread about publishing work for children.

I have a poem, written some time back, that I gather might suit publication in a children's picture-book format. Can anyone give me some ideas about how to link up with a suitable illustrator? My experience as a reader of picture books suggests that a good fit between the words and pictures is critical in the success of each and of the book as a whole.

I have no experience with publication, having only started writing seriously in the past year (late bloomer!)

one place i would check out,

www.irishstoryplayhouse.com

amazing place. if they can't fit your needs, the editor, Irish Monahan, is an amazing person who could at least point you in the write direction...wish you much success

(p.s. if you haven't tried Duotrope yet, you should, it may take some time but there is a ton of info there)

best wishes,

Pam,
The way I understand it is that most publishers prefer to find the illustrator themselves -you just provide the text. It's been a few years since I've been to writing sites for children, so I can't offer any good ones, but they're out there. (I googled the one I used to go to with a really helpful forum and the site is completely different now - paid membership...)
Good luck.

Sherry is correct. If you want to go the traditional publication route, do not get your own illustrator. It will actually make your story less marketable to any publisher.

Here's a good article with some basic information you might find useful.

Best of luck--
