Hi! Anyone know of an online poetry journal that takes online submissions in a form? With different fields for title, poem, etc. I am putting Mannequin Envy on hiatus in the spring and am looking for alternatives for a reincarnation.

Thanks!!!

Jennifer

Jennifier,

Happy New Year!

I have visited scores of online journals that use an online submission form, and have been disappointed in every case.

The forms do not allow for bold vs. regular, do not permit italics, and frustrate the posting of a poem with complex indentations. Yes, you can include a set of instructions above or below the poem, e.g. "*...*" denotes italics; "+" indicates an indentation of approximately 3 letters or one syllable, and "++" implies about 6 letters or two syllables. But this makes the poem awkward to read, buried as it is in code.

That said, to me the way the entire journal is organized is very important. I especially like the form used here --

Centrifugal Eye

-- as it replicates the layout of an actual paper journal in an online format using the Issuu Viewer. You can also download the entire issue of the journal, easy as pie, as a .pdf document.

If I were wanting to go "cutting edge," I would not only do what Centrifugal Eye is doing, I would also make it downloadable to Kindle.

By the way, I'm glad you are an admirer of Bertrand Russell. Thirty years ago, I read his A History of Western Philosophy -- and was hooked.

Best,

Fred

Ooh I had not looked at Centrifugal Eye in a while, very nice.

I understand the formatting issue. Thing is, when I get a poem in an email, it may or may not retain it's formatting. When I cut and paste it into DreamWeaver, it may or may not retain its formatting, so that issue affects all types of electronic submission.

I found Able Muse has a submission form that allows for formatting.

Amazing, I have been out of the submission loop for a year or so and everything has changed! Don't blink, future coming at the speed of light. Without wires.

Thanks! I will look into the Kindle thing as well!!!

Hi, Jenn -- Narrative Magazine has an excellent online submissions manager:

Narrative Submissions

It allows you to upload files in a number of different formats. Uploading a file instead of uploading the poem itself allows formatting to be retained, i.e., they get the Word document (if that's what you're using) just as you typed it in Word.

A few mags are also using an online submissions manager called ManuscriptHub.com:

ManuscriptHub.com

Again, you're uploading files, so formatting is retained. You must sign up for an account and there is a small processing fee, but the submission process is streamlined and easy.

Both these systems track your submissions, and allow you to check on the status of them any time you wish. They will tell you that your manuscript has been received and when editors have read and responded to it.

Hope these links are helpful to you. And do reincarnate Mannequin Envy. It will be missed!

Love,
M

Oh, and here are a few more

at 42Opus:

42Opus

at AGNI:

AGNI Online

at Boston Review:

Boston Review

They work on the same principles as the others.

Lots of mags are moving to online submission managers. The days of paper, envelopes, stamps and SASEs are numbered.

Love,
M
