I am sorry if this has been covered a zillion times before.

Why do so many poems have the symbol-- usually where ' or " are supposed to be?

Is it my Mac? My Firefox? Anyone else experience this? It is very distracting, and I feel badly because sometimes I cannot even get through a poem with all of the in the way.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jennifer

Im just taking a stab at this, but it well may be something on your machine that interprets the text here as symbols. Can you view this with another machine or program to see if it helps?

Often people will compose a response in Word or another word processing program and then post it. When that happens, sometimes the way Word interprets letters (and especially the curly quotes instead of the straight ones) gets corrupted when it's sent to another place, and while most of us see it as the text it's meant to be, some computers interpret some of the symbols as pure Ascii text, which is what that is.

I think someone once said its when you copy a opem from your word processor to the webpage. It can certainly be edited out afterwards, because I have done that.

One way to be sure of a 'clean' copy is to convert Word to plain text. Easiest (and most reliable) way I've found to do this is to use this site: http://jonathanhedley.com/articles/2008/03/convert-microsoft-word-to-plain-text
You can then use all the gizmos in the message box here to reinstate any bolds, italics etc that you might need.

What those who have responded have said is correct, Jennifer. But basically it's the way some browsers interpret codes for puntuation. For instance, one browser may interpret the code for a quotation mark as the punctuation itself, while another will interpret it as the code and display those funky symbols. So, some people will see if correctly and some people won't, depending on what browser they're using.

You can check it by coming into Wild in IE and in Firefox. If it's displaying properly in both of those, it's probably okay. If not, just choose the edit symbol on the top of the post (little icon that looks like a piece of paper with a pencil over it), remove the code, and insert the proper punctuation mark. That usually solves the problem.

~M~, I like that word "puntuation." It makes a comment on itself!

A useful tool for seeing how various browsers will "see" your code is available at http://browsershots.org/

Yes, Freddie, now I am making up my own words. I never did like that "c" in punctuation, so I'm throwing it out. It gets stuck in the back of my throat. Also, that "c" letter is in a very bad spot on the keyboard.

In famt, I will throw out every "_," and put an "m" in its plame. I like M mumh better, although I mouldn't tell you why.

Sinmerely,
M
