Kay Ryan on the News Hour

This video says it was aired on the 9th of March, but I saw it for the first time last night. It was really good. I thought she answered her critics really well and I'm on her side now as the right choice to represent American poets this year. Many of us write and work like she does, or care for family and write in the off hours. She is not from academia, she isn't really well known, but she is doing the job that is required of her and that's all that matters.

Laz,

Thanks for posting this. Loved the interview. Refreshing to hear a non-academic for a change. This site contains a very strong series of interviews with a wide variety of poets.

I've attended readings by Simic, Merwin, Haas, and Kinnel many moons ago. Even went to a small party with Simic and James Tate. Simic was very outgoing and had a great time running his mouth. Tate seemed kinda out of place and uncomfortable, kept to himself, and drank a lot of wine; I was too young and unsure of myself at the time to go strike up a conversation...... another one of life's little regrets.

Hi Jim, thanks for adding to the discussion. It's sometimes hard to believe these amazing artists are real people too! I felt that way seeing Sharon Olds read in a small venue at the Dodge festival. She was just so normal!

Great interview. I have always liked her work, and particularly the tension between "density" and "lightness" she discusses.

Thanks for posting.
