Dearest All -- here's a link to the just released 2008 National Book Awards Finalists Announcement:

2008 National Book Awards Finalists Video

Of course, what will probably be most interesting to us here is the Poetry category. What I was most thrilled to hear about was the selection of Patricia Smith's book, Blood Dazzler, as a finalist. I posted it as an Admin's Five-Star Pick not too long ago. You'll find that announcement here:

Admin's Five-Star Book Picks (10/03/08)

You really owe it to yourself to buy and read this collection. It's a must-not-miss! It's not often that a poetry collection knocks my socks off like this one did. I have no doubts it will be chosen as a winner by the selection committee.

And Mark Doty has been selected as well as a finalist for Fire to Fire. I know some around here really love him and have personal connections to him as well.

The other finalists include:

Watching the Spring Festival by Frank Bidart
Creatures of a Day by Reginald Gibbons
Without Saying by Richard Howard

I think this announcement makes for great cause for celebration. I strongly encourage you to read the National Book Award finalists, all of them, but especially the poetry. These are the poets at the top of the heap. They are ones to watch and to study. We could all learn much from them.

Love,
M
