"For one, having MFA editors who change every year means that HFR isn’t committed to any particular aesthetic or style." Heaven forbid that a non-MFA editor should parachute into their offices and then impose his or her crude, banal, and unlettered non-MFA aesthetic on their elegant & sophisticated publication. * * * * * Thanks for the link, ~M~. |

~M~, I was simply blown away at both the obtuse innocence of the above quote (in blue, from Hayden's Ferry Review's editor} and by its blatant absurdity. Consider a magazine that deals with matters of theological inquiry, saying, "For one, having Jesuit editors who change every year means that The Theological Inquirer isn't committed to any particular religion or metaphysic." * * * * * That said, the link HAS provided me with useful insight into the thinking of editors. What I REALLY am impressed with as far as small-press editors is that in a money-hungry, capitalistic economy, these people are almost to the last one doing this for the love of poetry, and for the love of rubbing elbows with other poets. Yeah, I know, Freddie. I was just teasin' ya'. I was kinda surprised by that Hayden's Ferry Review elitist comment myself. I know almost all the other editors on a personal or at least an acquaintance basis. Nearly all of them, with the exception of Amen and Garza, have sent me sensitive rejection letters. They're really good people with only the best intents. I admire the lot of them. What they're trying to do is enormous, and their hearts are in a good place. Doing what I do for Stirring is difficult enough. I can't even imagine trying to run it all with objectivity and grace. Editing and organizing a great mag is tough, tough work. And for no money? Honestly, I think they all deserve big kudos just for trying to tackle it. Glad to hear the links have been useful to you. Love, M |
