Dearest M and All,

I've been looking forward to the release of a book on the subject of revision that I'd heard about entitled Poem, Revised 54 Poems, Revisions, Discussions. With a subject like that a poet is bound to have more understanding of the process of revision (far more difficult for me than the creation process) than he had going into it. There are no superstars (it would have been great to have a few) but "hardworking contemporary poets" who "let their pants down" so we might have a look at their personal revision process.

Here is the writeup. Thought Wild might want to add this to a list of their goodies.

Poem, Revised
54 Poems, Revisions, Discussions

Robert Hartwell Fiske (Editor), Laura Cherry (Editor)

The creative world of the writer is uncovered in this captivating exploration of the techniques of poetry revision. An in-depth look at the writing processes of 54 poems, each by a different modern author, is provided, complete with early drafts, subsequent revised versions, and short essays from the poets themselves revealing how and why they made specific changes, as well as their editing secrets. Poetry lovers will enjoy browsing through their favorite works and authors, and budding writers will learn the skills needed to grow a first draft into a polished final piece.

Robert Hartwell Fiske is the editor of The Vocabula Review, a journal about the English language. He is the author of The Dictionary of Concise Writing, The Dictionary of Disagreeable English, and The Dimwit's Dictionary. He lives in Rockport, Massachusetts. Laura Cherry is the author of What We Planted, winner of the 2002 Philbrick Poetry Award. Her work has appeared in such publications as Agenda, Argestes, Asphodel, and Forklift: Ohio and in the anthology Present Tense. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

Wow E,
That would be so helpful, a poets complete writing process. Thank you for posting.
Love, R

Dearest E -- thanks so much for the lead on this one. Yes, it sounds very good. As soon as I get a free moment, I'll investigate.

BTW -- I have so many good books to read lately, I'm going to have to hire someone to read them for me. I already only sleep 5 hours a night and read while I'm eating and driving. I've tried to read in the shower, but the perils there are obvious. Know of any good waterproof books? *LOL*

Love,
M

Wow dearest that's impressive. Well I suggest that you get yourself a USB port installed somewhere on your anatomy so you can er "plug and play" without having to worry about time constraints. Is there a poem here somewhere heh heh? Let me know what you think of the book and if you put it in the bookstore I'll buy it through there. Dumb question but you guys only get credit if I buy a new one from Amazon, not a used book of any kind that they sell is that correct?

Dearest Ran,

I hope it is helpful!! I can't see how from a numbers point of view there weren't be something to learn from someone on how to take a poem apart and put it back together again. Presumably these people have discovered their own methods and/or have gleaned tips from pros which they will share.

e

Not a dumb question, dear heart. No question is dumb, and as it turns out, this one especially. Wild gets credit for anything you buy through the BookShop link -- new books, old books, things that aren't even books. If you somehow manage to find a man you can buy in there, we'll get credit for that too. *LMAO* I'll put the link to this one up in a bit, but if you just go to the WPF BookShop and enter Amazon through our portal, we'll get credit for it even if it's not actually displayed on our pages. Entering through the portal is the key. Then anything you buy is credited.

Dearest sue -- ah, thanks, sweetknees. I'll just rip the covers off the note book and wrap them around my books. I can't always have my nose in a book, huh? I'll tell you how bad it is. The other night, I dreamt I was reading a book. Not watching myself read a book. I was actually able to read it -- like turn the pages and everything. So, now my secret is out. I even sleep read, like some people sleep eat or sleep walk. It's kinda freaky really. I didn't think you could actually do that. I can't remember what book it was, but I do remember it was very good and I was kinda pissed when I woke up and realized I'd never get a chance to finish it. *LOL* I've never heard of that happening to anyone else. So, I think that makes me officially the world's biggest book addict.

Love,
M

Terrific! I'm glad I finally asked. I am going to bookmark the bookshop now so that I shop through that portal. I buy plenty of used books. I'll bet lots of Wilders do. The man I am looking for is not on sale. This is the problem--when I try for the discount dude, Woody Allen's face appears. George Clooney is the most expensive but I shop mostly in the Latin section anyway with an eye on Javier Bardem
