http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm/content_id.22845/Books Today a young man, a student in the university, gave me this link, "1001 Books you must read before die". I checked now, wow! There are so many that I must read... But I also checked what I read in all my life, 245 books in this list. but there are more than this that not included in this list. I can't believe all our life (like someone as me) should be passing between pages of books, if it is wanted to read all of them. There are some names who I love to read them again and again, and I read most of their books, for example, Margurite Duras, Kafka, Shakespear, Margurite Yourcenar, Hermann Hesse, Richard Bach, St.Exupιry, J.J.Roussseau, J.P.Sartre, Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, Hemingway, Jack London, Borges, Neruda, Emily Dickinson, Virginia Wolf, E.A.Poe, T.S.Eliot,...and more I can add from my literature too. But of course 1001 books is a well number and well point for a man having all these reading experiences... Blessing and Happiness into your reading life, with my love, nia Butterfly Wings of Nia "Carry the beauties;wash the badnesses with your poetical spirit"

The trouble with these lists is they generate who isn't there lists, and with this one not in alpha order that is a bit difficult. But for me Titus Groan Dark Tower Asimov, Bradbury, Heinlein and the boys James Lee Burke Patrick O'Brien Ed McBain Emily, Walt and Willie Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire A whole slew of children's books from Winnie and Wind in the Willows to the good Dr Z History of the English Speaking World Profiles in Courage Harry Potter and pardon any of those of there. You see, my list will be different, but similar (we both do Tarzen and Bond) but both equally valid. The key is to read and learn. BTW, some of these are no more than short stories. Smiles. Yes, these lists are always open to dispute! And at a quick look, there are books there that I would classify as ok but not as 'must reads' - White Teeth, for example, I thought was over-rated. Nice to see Douglas Adams there, though. |

Rosemary, you are so right, this is not well-done, I mean the list... even how they lsted them, for what, for who... And there are also so many names that weren't listed in, and why? But in any case, 1001 books are standing there and I am always a good reader and reading takes a big part of my life for a long time, I can say from my childhood time till now. Even more than my writing time. But I there are still so many books that I havent read them yet... This is amazing of course. Maybe the point is this!!! A life of a man, can it be enough to read all of them, I am thinking... Yes, Gary, the key is to read and learn... On the other hand there are some books you read but dont leave any sign, any impressive touch, and they almost disappeare from your mind... But also there is another point, when you read a book, for example in your youth ages and you didnt like it and you think that you never take this book and read. But one day you read and this time you say WOW! how I missed to read it like that before... Of course between reader and book, there is always a very special relation, book and reader should be ready to each other. This is a kind of voyage between book/reader and book/yourself... layers of layers in this reading voyage. Right now I try to find the original version of the "Heart of Darkness", written by Joseph Conrad. It would be so exciting for me to read it in its original language after many years then... I hope I can find. Otherwise I will look for when I go abroad. Thank you, have a nice weekend, with my love, nia Butterfly Wings of Nia "Carry the beauties;wash the badnesses with your poetical spirit"

Nia, for me the book that exemplifies that is Doctor Zhivago. I tried in while young and could not get past the first chapter, but picked it up years later, ckipped chapter 1 and loved it. I don't see it on the list but the list is difficult to find works on, and I do see others I mentioned in my first post. One more thing. It is Anglo-centric, and misses a fair number of Eastern works which is really unfortunate. And I really can't figure out why William S does not make the list... Smiles. Gary - William Shatner? Isn't he more famous for his singing? (Message edited by endolith on July 19, 2008) |

any list of 'must reads' is as subjective as 'favorite foods' and depends on the education and background of the person making the list. I was half way through the list before I found even a name I was familiar with, and the ones I did know I had read and for the most part came away empty. I dont see Robert Pirszig, Ayn Rand, Ursula LeGuin. I agree, Gary, no Heinlein, Bradbury, Asimov, my god no Asimov. your list and mine would probably be much closer to each other's. Where are (unless I missed it) E. B. White, and all the good mystery writers? I guess the minute you start making a list it's as much about who you don't include as it is who you choose. |
