. From Harbrace College Handbook, Twelfth Edition "Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs: rarely saw, call daily, soon left, left sooner -- (modifying verbs) very short, too angry, never shy, not fearful -- (modifying adjectives) practically never loses, nearly always cold -- (modifying other adverbs) In addition, an adverb may modify a verbal, a phrase, a clause, or even the rest of the sentence in which it appears: I noticed a plane slowly circling overhead. -- (modifying phrase) Honestly, Joe wasn't speeding. -- (modifying entire sentence) The -ly ending nearly always converts adjectives to adverbs: rare, honest (adjectives) rarely, honestly (adverbs)" . |
