This morning I opened Yahoo search engine. I wanted to research the poetry form richtameter. I typed in richtameter and started down the page of URL's. At the fifth, I got a shock. Listed as an example of an English Sonnet to promote Wild Poetry is MY poem One Soul to Shape. Some one had to chose this poem and list it there, I am honored that the quality of the poem merits this consideration. I would, however, have liked one little word of acknowledgement, nothing more, just a courteous note. The poem was posted here in accordance with the guidelines and rules set forth by the site, so I'm not upset that the poem was used, just would have liked a simple notification if not thanks.

Rum, the url is

http://70.103.16.160/~wildpoet/discus/messages/10521/43166.html?1168034394

which is the regular light crit forum url for the poem as you posted it for comment.

I did the same search on google and did not see it.

I will be honest, I didn't think Wild forum posts appeared on the engines because the site is passworded.

Apparently wrong again.

But I don't think it was posted to promote Wild, only there cause this is where we do biz.

Smiles.

Rum, I don't know anything about this?? Maybe ~M~ or Lisa will know. I can't see any of the moderators or administrators doing this without asking your permission.

It's the word "richtameter" that was searched, and found there in your post-- not the poem as an example.
You can search "4rum" and get the same page.

And yes, Gary, Wild id PW protected in as far as posting-- not browsing.

Dear 4rum -- I just sent this in response to your e-mail. I am posting it here for your clarification as well as any other members who might have questions about this:

"Dear 4rum -- Unfortunately, we have no control over the robots on search engines that search and save information from the internet. The word "richtameter" appeared in your post. It was typed there by you:

"WOW! Thanks EVERYONE especially ljc for the time and effort put into helping me. I'm new to writing, VERY new to poetry, and have just started studying form poetry (English Sonnet, rime royal, haiku, richtameter and others). I have so much to learn. My deepest gratitude to you folks for taking the time to offer advise, guidance and assistance."

When these search engines like Yahoo send out their automated robots, they categorize all words found on a site. They save the URL link to those sites for billions of words. Then when someone types in a specific word (as you did with richtameter), the search engine will list any site that has that word on it automatically. The site itself has no control over search engine robots or what sites appear when you type a specific word into a search engine.

Wild Poetry Forum has NOTHING whatsoever to do with this process. This happens at every site on the internet with every word posted. The fact that richtameter is quite an unusual word is probably why Wild Poetry Forum and your poem in particular were listed so high on the search engine results. Most likely there are not that many sites with this word posted on it, relatively speaking.

Wild Poetry Forum does NOT use any member's poem(s) as promotional advertising for our site. And even if we did, we would certainly obtain the member's permission before we utilized it in any way. By posting work on Wild Poetry Forum, however, you do give Wild the permission to display it on Wild Poetry Forum. This works the same with any site at which you make postings of any kind. We have to be able to display it so that you might receive comments on it. We do NOT use the poem in any capacity beyond displaying it. And search engines will find it since it is in the public domain.

If you have any further questions regarding this or automated robots utilized by search engines like Yahoo, please contact us. We suggest you do research on automated search engine robots to confirm this information and further educate yourself on this subject.

Best,

Thanks everyone for the response and clearing up this for me.

Especially thank you ~M~ for your prompt and courteous attention. As I said, wasn't upset, just shocked to have the poem listed in a URL. First time that's happened.

Your explanation is more than adequate, thanks again, and again, My very best to all at WP.
